We received a call from a community member about a dog that had been hit by a car. We arrived at the scene, loaded her into the vehicle and drove her straight to the vet. She could not put any weight on her rear legs and we feared they were broken, but miraculously, the x rays showed no broken bones. The muscle on her rear leg was atrophied, however, indicating an older injury. She was swollen, septic and battling a massive infection. Maude spent three days hospitalized as she battled the infection, receiving fluids. Finally, she was released to go home with a foster.

Maude’s recovery has been far from easy. She’s a sassy girl, and having to contain her and prevent her from overdoing it has been a challenge. She had to have orthopedic TPLO surgery to repair her rear leg, requiring months of crate rest. Maude is now fully recovered from surgery and still looking for a family to call her own.

Beyond Rescue is a vlog series created to showcase the life and times Gateway Pet Guardians. In October 2018, GPG will be acquiring a building to begin moving all operations to East St. Louis, Illinois. We wanted to document this transition and show what it truly means to be an animal welfare agency that takes a more holistic approach--focusing not only on the rescue of animals, but the people who love and adore them, as well.
